Science

What happens to your skin in the shower?

The top layer of your skin is a thin protective shield. It keeps water in and irritants out. In the shower, two things wear it down most: hot water and harsh lather.

2.3×

Why does hot water dry your skin?

50 people held their hands in water at about 41 degrees for 10 minutes. The water evaporating from their skin rose 2.3-fold. In cold water the increase was much smaller.

40 °C

Is it the water or the lather?

It's the two together. Plain water, warm or hot, didn't change the skin's water loss. When a harsh foaming agent was used at 40 degrees, water loss rose noticeably.

Ohlenschlaeger J 1996Randomised experimental, n=20·Berardesca E 1995Experimental, n=10

Hard water

Does the water at home matter too?

In hard water, more of the foaming agent stays on the skin and irritates it more. Softening the water reduced this effect. Rinse the lather off with plenty of water.

Danby SG 2018Experimental, n=80

29.4%

How common is dry skin?

A screening of 48,630 people in Germany found dry skin in roughly one in every three to four. The rate rises with age; in cold, dry weather the barrier is under more strain.

In a study of 50 people, hands were kept in water for 10 minutes and the water evaporating from the skin was measured. Drag the slider and see the difference.

Hot water more than doubled water loss. In another study, plain water alone didn't create this difference; the gap grew when hot water and a harsh foaming agent came together.

Sweat odour

Sweat doesn't smell. The odour comes later

So the issue is less about sweating and more about what happens to sweat on your skin.

Prebiotic Shower Gel is formulated to help against sweat odour. After exercise, lather your underarms, chest and back with a little extra care, then rinse with plenty of water.

The deodorant you use also changes the bacterial community in your underarms. In one study, bacterial counts rose in people who stopped using antiperspirant, then dropped sharply when they started again.

    Sweat comes out odourless

Researchers collected 500 ml of underarm sweat under sterile conditions. It didn't smell.

    02

Some skin bacteria break it down

Sweat contains odourless molecules. A few bacterial species living in the underarm break them down. Not every species causes odour; most of the smell comes from just a few.

Prebiotic

What does a prebiotic do?

A prebiotic is a nutrient that beneficial microorganisms use selectively. Antibacterial products clean without discriminating. The idea behind a prebiotic product is different: to clean while protecting the skin's natural balance.

Gibson GR 2017Consensus statement·Krutmann J 2009Review

What do we know?

A face serum containing the prebiotic GOS increased the skin's water retention over 8 weeks compared with a placebo.

Hong KB 2020Randomised, placebo-controlled, n=60· A leave-on serum

In the lab, some prebiotics held back unwanted bacteria while leaving the beneficial species naturally found on the skin untouched.

Di Lodovico S 2020Laboratory·Le Bourgot C 2022Laboratory

On skin irritated by a harsh foaming agent, moisture dropped and the skin's bacterial community changed as well. That's why gentle cleansing matters.

Leoty-Okombi S 2021Experimental

What don't we know?

In a 6-week study with a prebiotic shower gel and lotion, the skin's bacterial profile changed. Moisture, however, was similar to a product without prebiotics.

Li M 2023Randomised clinical, n=53· Manufacturer-supported

How a prebiotic works in a product that's rinsed off in the shower isn't well understood yet. Reviews also note that knowledge about prebiotics applied to the skin is limited. We're saying so openly.
